McGonagall is the queen of transfiguration…she has must more experience than bellatrix. I’m sure that she would win.

Professor Mcgonagall would win in a duel. I think this because she is second to dumbledore and survived 4 stunning spells to the chest.

McGonagall would win in a duel. She beat severus snape in a duel and even dueled voldemort himself. She is the transfiguration queen and is second only to dumbledore. She also survived four stunning spells to the chest. She is also an animagus which only very powerful wizards/witches can become.

@Simen, i disagree, mcgonagall was stronger, im sure she wanted to duel without the others coming as much as snape did. all that was done was flitwick cast a spell at snape that didnt hit. mcgonagall had a counter for everything that snape did and then some. no doubt in my mind if mcgonagall could take snape or bellatrix.

Let’s face it McGonagall won, i’m a huge fan of snape and mcgonagall, but we have to admit that McGonagall won. Snape had to take cover of McGonagall’s flying daggers and at that time the other teachers weren’t even there. The other teachers didnt even help McGonagall. All flitwick did was cast a spell that didnt even hit snape.Yes Severus was indeed a very powerful wizard, but McGonagall has much more experience than Snape. I think they are both indeed very powerful, but experience pays off. Whoever said that Snape was good at transfiguration? The ones that were extremely skilled at transfiguration were Dumbledore and McGonagall. If its true that Snape was more powerful than McGonagall then why didn’t Dumbledore put him as his Deputy over McGonagall? I have no doubt whatsoever that McGonagall would beat Severus or Bellatrix in a duel.

i would say your the idiot if you don’t know what experience is? He was just implying. When you have experience in combat and magic then that would give you a complete advantage. So your saying that if McGonagall duelled someone like Ginny weasley or Hermione Granger, ginny or hermione would win because of luck? i don’t think so

yes,if ginny stuck mcgonagall with the killing curse or reducto of COURSE!!!
and btw, as i said there is no well defined more powerful – you get eduactaeed really wierdly in potter land. you don’t gain charter marks or anything like in other fantasies.
being old or “expericned’ does not leat you think harder and pronounce things right.
there is no spell theroy in potter land wihcih annoys me.

yeah it really doesn’t matter if he was on the good side, McGonagall had him beat even when the other professors weren’t there. and besides nowhere in the book during the duel says that snape didnt want to hurt McGonagall. The duel ends with snape shielding himself from McGonagall’s flying daggers, before the other teachers arrived. We know how powerful snape is, but McGonagall not really because she doesnt get a chance to show off all her power, she might even be good at the dark arts as she used the imperius curse we really dont know. One thing i do know is that she would have slightly defeated snape in a duel.

McGonagall wasn’t fighting to the best of her abilities either, it was hard to duel snape when he was just defending. McGonagall was far more wiser and experienced than snape was. She had fought against the dark arts and knows how to protect against it. It is no wonder Dumbledore had her as his deputy. Also McGonagall was very strong and brave and it would take alot to taker her down like those four stunning spells. Nowhere does it say that snape knew more spells than McGonagall. I’m just going with what the book said, and clearly McGonagall had snape beaten even though neither were fighting to the best of their abilities.

i have no doubt that in a fair fight minerva would win, however, bellatrix would NEVER fight fair. Lets face facts, she would throw curses at whoever was nearby and Minerva would probably give up her life to save whoever Bellatrix targetted, also, I believe Bellatrix has more FIGHTING experience, and knows a great many more spells for fighting and dark magic, yes, Minerva is a genius, but is like 20 years older than Bellatrix and I think that may work against her. Bella is also not above taunting her to get her angry/sad/annoyed so that she cannot fight nearly her best.
and Bellatrix is hot

First of all, I think McGonagall would defeat Bellatrix in a Duel. Like evrybody else has said, Minerva is a Superior witch of great skill and power and is probably the most powerful witch in the wizarding world. People always mistake her of not being powerful and in my opinion they are just being prejudice, because they really haven’t seen her full fighting ability. McGonagall, without a doubt, could deflect a spell from dumbledore or even Voldemort as she took him on with Kingsley and Slughor. Just because Bellatrix blocked a spell from Dumbledore doesn’ mean McGonagall can’t either. McGonagall has also fought in two wars and i am pretty sure she is a master duellist herself, in my opinion the only one that can bring her down from the dark side would be Voldemort himself and i still think then she would put up a good fight. McGonagall has also used the unforgivable curses too and this shows that she might have had knowledge in the dark arts as those are the most sinister spells there are. its just that, like dumbledore, McGonagall didnt like to use dark magic. I am pretty sure McGonagall would defeat Bellatrix.
As for Snape and McGonagal, like they said it was inaccurate measure of their abilities. Though i do think they both can take bellatrix. First of all Snape was on the good side secretly. So it was against Dumbledore if he continued to duel McGonagall. Though here is my opinion of who would win in a duel without anybody interfereing. I think McGonagall would defeat Snape, but only by a little bit. You are forgeting that McGonagall was not just a teacher, but a leading member of the order of the phoenix, a great ally of dumbledore second only to him on the good side. I think that if McGonagall knew she couldnt defeat snape she wouldnt attack him. I am pretty sure that in a real duel she would come out on top. Like i said people insist that Snape is good at so many thins but that does not mean that McGonagall isnt. And im pretty sure that fighting in two wars, McGonagall would be a master duelllist, so we cant say that she doesnt have skills in dueling as she is probably one of the best duelists there is. I think McGonagall would defeat Snape because of her experience and her wiseness, which would help her come out on top but by a little bit…They both are pretty much evenly matched and i know they both can beat bellatrix.

Realistically speaking and being true to the book, we can’t really say who will win in a Snape and McGongall “duel”. The duel between them during Hogwarts was inaccurate and very short too if I may add. J.K. Rowling didn’t give them alot of exposure to show of their magical prowess. That being said, we really couldn’t hypothetically say which one is going to win. Ultimately, it really comes down to what an individual thinks who is going to win- our own opinions. So my opinion is that Snape is going to win while you say that McGongall is going to win. I have no problem with that and I am quite happy that people can share their own opinions.
If only J.K. Rowling can give us some insight on who really is the most powerful between the three :/

yes i agree(:, everyone has there opinions, but we really don’t know who would win or who is the most powerful…Only one who knows is J.K. Rowling, who created all three of them and we really do need an insight to this topic because that duel was very short and like you say inaccurate

I highly believe that Bellatrix would win a duel against McGonagall. Bellatrix is a very powerful witch and a Death Eater, second only to Voldemort and was also his “best lieutenant.” McGongall is also a talented witch but just not on par with Bellatrix. McGongall is second only to Dumbledore but not in terms of magical capabilities.
—QUOTE- J.K. Rowling
In fact, I would tend to think that being very, very intelligent might create some problems and it has done for Dumbledore, because his wisdom has isolated him, and I think you can see that in the books, because where is his equal, where is his confidante, where is his partner? He has none of those things. He’s always the one who gives, he’s always the one who has the insight and has the knowledge. So I think that, while I ask the reader to accept that McGonagall is a very worthy second in COMMAND, she is not an equal.—
People had been saying that McGongall is second only to Dumbledore but they’re forgetting what the context of Rowling’s quote was. Jo was merely saying that since Dumbledore never had a confidant nor partner (whereas we assume that most people do, with his intelligence, responsibilities, etc.) McGonagall is there as a second in command. Someone Dumbledore can trust to leave behind all these responsibilities and still know they will get it done. It does not necessarily mean she is magically powerful. It could just mean that she has traits that are similar to Dumbledore that is rare to find: being extremely insightful, intelligent, etc…
While age does mean much more experience, against such a young foe like Belltarix it would be disadvantageous. Bellatrix will be much more agile and faster than the aging McGonagall. Also, despite McGongall being a notable member of the OOTP, she is still a teacher of Hogwarts. I doubt she will abandon her post to participate in battles during the First Wizarding War. Bellatrix on the other hand was battling on the battlefield during the first war and the second as well. She participates in many battles with the Death Eaters adding much more experience in dueling giving her an edge against McGongall. Bellatrix Lestrange was an incredibly talented duellist, and defeated and seriously injured Nymphadora Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt in duels during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, two powerful wizard and witch as well as being exceptional aurors. She also defeated and killed her cousin Sirius, also a powerful wizard and was the only Death Eater to deflect a spell from Albus Dumbledore himself, allowing her to escape the vastly more powerful wizard. She was shown to be far more powerful than Harry, who was noted for being the best practitioner of Defence against the Dark Arts in his school year. She also quickly and single-handedly defeated four Snatchers and Fenrir Greyback, and later killed her niece in battle, Nymphadora Tonks a powerful witch and skilled auror during the Battle of Hogwarts. Just before her death, Bellatrix duelled Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood, and Ginny Weasley all at once, and was described as being equal in power to all three of the talented, if inexperienced, witches. In addition, despite her being imprisoned in Azakaban, Bellatrix displayed incredible reflexes that outmatched the much younger and physically fit Harry Potter; she was able to conjure a Shield Charm and deflect his own spell back at him the moment he cast it. She was also physically fit enough to throw a knife with lethal accuracy across a room to strike her target as seen during the Skirmish at Malfoy Manor which killed Dobby the House Elf. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Bellatrix was the last Death Eater standing, apart from Lord Voldemort, and it should be noted that she was wielding a wand that which she had most likely not won the allegiance of, which is further evidence of her exceptional duelling skills.

i can tell that you got this from the harry potter wiki site…McGonagall played a vital role in the first wizarding role and in the second wizarding war she took on a bigger role, were saying that McGonagall is second to Dumbledore on the good side, not in overall wizards, just like Bellatrix is to Voldemort on the evil side. McGonagall has shown incredibly fast speed when she attacked snape and that because she is old. so McGonagall might be old but she is still very fast. In regards to the malfoy manner where Bellatrix easily took out the snatchers…in the 5th book when McGonagall was attacked, Madam Pomfrey said that if they had faced her and not cheap shoted her they wouldnt have been able to take her out. Now that i mention that she was hit with four stunners and survived, which shows her strength for an old woman. I’m pretty sure McGonagall was more powerful than Kingsley and Nymphadora. Bellatrix only defeated sirius because sirius wasnt taking her seriously and that’s when bellatrix’s curse send him through the arch. In the end, McGonagall would defeat bellatrix. McGonagall even dueled the dark lord himself, if thats not enough proof of her dueling skills(alongside kingsley and slughorn)

McGonagall wasn’t just TEACHING in the first wizarding war, she played a very important role as she was one of Dumbledore’s most trusted and loyal followers. When, Fudge, Umbridge, Kingsley and Dawlish came she said that she would fight them on Dumbledore’s behalf. Also McGonagall seems to be familiar with Aurors as she told Harry Potter that she would help him train and tutor him to achieve his goal of becoming an auror. You still don’t get the fact that McGonagall fought in two wizarding wars and she has never been taken down in any of the battles, while kingsley and tonks (altough i like them because there cool) were defeated by bellatrix in the battle of department of mysteries and battle of Hogwarts. Just because McGonagall has always been a teacher doesn’t mean she isn’t capable of dueling as shown in the battle of the astronomy tower and of hogwarts. I bet if McGonagall wasn’t cheap shoted and injured by umbridge and her aurors, she would have taken part in the Battle of the Department of mysteries.

well as you said bellatrix only defeated sirius because she hit him with a curse so we see that this is alot aobut luck and reaction so you can’t really say who will win!!!!
and how do you know if sirius was serious (sirius hahaha) then bella would not have beat him?!!!!!!!
i’m pretty sure if you you look carefully you can find some contradictions in the book!
for excample hermione defeated dolohov who defeated mad eye.
does that mean hermiones more powerful then mad eye.

Let’s clear up the animagus issue; no, not only very powerful witches and wizards can become animagi. Peter Pettigrew became one and he is a pathetic wizard.
I think Bellatrix would win. McGonagall may be second to Dumbledore but Bellatrix is second to Voldemort. Yes, Minerva has experience, but the majority of that is TEACHING. Bellatrix has far, far more battle experience.

If “being a teacher” means that someone cannot be a powerful duelist, this would also mean that Albus Dumbledore who served as a teacher and also headmaster of Hogwarts for so many years, is weak as well. I think that the fact that McGonagall was a teacher of transfiguration and lived at hogwarts for so many years, gave her the opportunity to become a really powerful witch as she had access to resources and knowledge that could only be found at the school.

Teaching and battling are two completely different things. A wizard who teaches may have had access to great a pool of magical knowledge that would help him/her in general, but not specifically for battling. Otherwise, Divination, Herbology and other such classes give a teacher “apparently” experience in battling as a couple of you have said. Transfiguration is a subject taught at Hogwarts that focuses on transfiguring objects to follow a wizard’s bidding. It is mostly used in the daily lives of the wizarding society but can be also used in dueling. However, spending the rest of your life battling gives off much more experience in dueling than teaching at school. If you what you say is real, then we can say that a teacher who teaches constitutional law has much more experience in every aspect of the Constitution than a judge of the Supreme Court. Perhaps a teacher at a military school has much more experience in battling and whatnot than a Five Star General who leads his troops on the front-lines in battle. Sounds highly fallible.
Albus Dumbledore was a great wizard from the start and it didn’t take him to become powerful by simply teaching at Hogwarts. It would be foolish to think that because Dumbledore taught transfiguration at Hogwarts, it allowed him to beat the renowned wizard Grindelwald. Dumbledore was already a powerful wizard even before he came back teaching at Hogwarts.

J.K Rowling has stated that she had planned on McGonagall to kill Snape and then finding out that he was on the good side. So this means McGonagall would’ve won in a duel. Also she has stated that if Professors Sprout and Flitwick didn’t show up, McGonagall would’ve killed Snape in a matter of minutes. So clearly when the author of the books says that we know clearly who wins and you can’t condradict her because she wrote the books.

mcgonagall is far stronger than bellatrix, DONT YOU BELLATRIX LOVERS KNOW THAT when she was a baby she was already capable of UNDERAGE MAGIC, which proves of her power and skill as a witch
Duelling: Minerva was an incredibly skilled duellist, capable of holding her own against much younger and more agile Death Eaters, Severus Snape, and even Lord Voldemort himself. During the Battle of the Astronomy Tower she defeated Alecto Carrow and survived the battle unscathed. In 1998, during the Battle of Hogwarts she fiercely duelled Severus Snape and drove him out of the school, though it should be noted that in the book Snape only fled because of the arrival of Filius Flitwick and Pomona Sprout while in the film she fends off Snape alone. Later in that same battle she duelled the Dark Lord himself to a stalemate alongside Horace Slughorn and Kingsley Shacklebolt.

As if one of them could have Stunned Minerva McGonagall face-on by daylight!”
—Poppy Pomfrey on Minerva’s magical abilities.[src]
Minerva McGonagall was an extremely powerful and talented witch with a variety of magical abilities. Her abilities enabled her to fend off many dark wizards, as seen during the Battle of Hogwarts. Minerva could even hold off Voldemort for a while. Her physical strength should also be noted, as she took four stunning spells to the chest and didn’t die
